Achhi Shuruat Ganesha aur Finolex ke Saath
‘Ganpati Bappa Morya’ resonates the air. It is that time of the year again, the birth of the much-loved and most popular elephant-headed God – Lord Ganesha. He is the Lord of the Beginnings, the Remover of Obstacles, the Deity of Good Fortune, and many more… Did you know that Lord Ganesha is known by 108 names altogether! His arrival is filled with joy, celebrations, excitement, and prayers. Homes and sarvajanik pandals (community tents) are transformed with artful decorations, brightly-painted Ganesh idols, dazzling lights, and festive offerings. Adding to the festivity, are the very catchy Bollywood Movie numbers, made especially for this occasion. The older and ever popular, ‘Deva Ho Deva Ganpati Deva’ is a definite on the list. Not to forget, the newer favourites, ‘Deva Shree Ganesha’ from the movie ‘Agneepath’. Another hit number is the ‘Maurya Re’, where Shah Rukh Khan performs the energetic visarjan (immersion) dance. Lord Ganesha is popular and recognised the world over. Along with Bappa, you will notice his vehicle in the form of a rat. There are multiple reasoning behind Mooshika, as he is popularly known. One being, rodents were and are still the destroyers of food and property. Lord Ganesha, in having a rat as his vehicle, is symbolically shown to have conquered this pest, just as he is known as the destroyer of obstacles.

Lord Ganesha, like all of us, has his favourites too. Did you know his favourite food, his favourite colour, and that he even has a favourite flower! If you have guessed correctly, modaks (sweet-steamed dumplings) are his much-loved sweet. Red being his favourite colour, is no wonder then, his favourite flower is the red hibiscus. So, what are your favourites, then?
Even as Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated all over India, as well as in other parts of the world, nothing can compare to the pomp and fanfare as the festivities across Maharashtra. In fact, it was in Mumbai, erstwhile Bombay, where at the end of the 19th Century, Lokmanya Tilak began with community celebrations, which continues and has become even more spectacular today. Maharashtra is also well known for its eight temples dedicated to Lord Ganesha and called as Ashtavinayaka, which literally translates as ‘eight Ganeshas’ in Sanskrit.
On the 10th day, the festivities culminate with euphoric crowds, prayer chants, beating drums, spirited dancing, foot-tapping music and a twinge of sadness with Lord Ganesha’s immersion. The processions are spectacular, and a visual delight of colours and dancing. Chants fill the air with hopes for a quick return the following year.
